223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SMITH, Arthur Joseph “Buster” WWI Arthur was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1899 and moved to The Pas, Manitoba at an early age. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on December 6, 1915 and served in England and France with the 101st Battalion during World War I. Arthur was wounded on October 9, 1916, leaving him with shrapnel in his lung, neck and wrist. He was hospitalized in Rouen, France then transferred to Derby War Hospital in Warrington, England. He was eventually invalided back to Canada where he received medical discharge on February 20, 1918. Arthur was a member of The Pas Legion Branch 19, as well as Flin Flon Legion Branch 73. Arthur passed away on December 25, 1970. SMITH, Claude Arthur WWII Claude was the son of Arthur and Lucy Smith. He was born in The Pas, Manitoba on August 6, 1921. Claude and his brother Kenneth travelled to Toronto, where they joined the Army on October 15, 1941. He and Ken trained as radio operators. Claude served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany during World War II. He was discharged and returned to The Pas in 1946. In 1952, he moved to Flin Flon until 1955 when he returned to Germany for a three-year peacekeeping tour. He spent his remaining years in Flin Flon and passed away on November 16, 1995. He was a member of Flin Flon Legion Branch 73 for sixty years. SMITH, Kelvon Gordon PEACETIME Kelvon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1949. He joined No. 49 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps John Travers Cornwell V.C in September 1962. He attended General Training at Comox, BC (HMCS Quadra) and Esquimalt, BC (Her Majesty’s Dockyard Esquimalt). He joined the Canadian Armed Forces (Cadets Instructor List) as a Naval Midshipman on January 4, 1971. He was with No. 60 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Swiftsure in Brandon, MB for many years and achieved the rank of Lieutenant (N). After being the Commanding Officer of Swiftsure, he transferred to No.2528 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps XII Manitoba Dragoons in Virden, MB where he became Captain. He ended his Cadet Career as the Commanding Officer of the XII Manitoba Dragoons Cadet Corps. While with the CIL and CIC he took many courses offered by DND to Cadet Officers. He retired at the age of 65 at which point he was presented with numerous certificates and a huge Canadian flag. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with two bars, 125th Medal Confederation of Canada, Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In real life, he was an educator with the Fort La Bosse School Division for 39 years. He is a member of Virden Legion Branch 8.
