221 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SLATER, Stanley WWII Stanley, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Slater, was born in Middlechurch, Manitoba on November 7, 1907. He was educated in Baldur. He enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in May 1940, trained at Fort Osborne Barracks, and transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers and trained at Dundurn, Saskatchewan in August that year. He also trained at Woodstock and Petawawa, Ontario before going overseas in March 1942 to Italy, where he was wounded in Ortona in 1943. Stanley resided in Greenway. SLOAN, Robert WWII Robert was the son of Mrs. Eva Sigurdson, and was born on July 20, 1923 in the Bru District near Cypress River. He joined the Army on January 9, 1943 and was a member of the Canadian Armoured Car Regiment. He married Rene Cramer and they had six children. Robert resided in Port Alberni, British Columbia. SMART, Thomas E. Q. WWII Thomas was born in Kisbey, Saskatchewan on November 30, 1925. He joined the Navy in Winnipeg in December 1942 during World War II. Thomas did his basic training in Winnipeg and Nova Scotia. He was drafted to destroyer for the English Navy - HMS Seymour and took it across the Atlantic to Belfast, Ireland. He was then drafted to the Canadian Navy base at Niobe, Scotland for a month or more; after which, he was drafted to Belfast where HMCS Petrolia was being built. He took Petrolia out for trials and was then assigned to C-4 Convoy Group. He took many convoys across the Atlantic consisting of Merchant ships loaded for England. They delivered hundreds but also had hundreds torpedoed. The North Atlantic was full of German submarines. At the end of the war, the Petrolia was sold to India and Thomas was discharged in Winnipeg. HMCS Petrolia did North Atlantic convoy duty from 1943 to the end of the war. Thomas has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159 for 54 years.
