213 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SHARPE, Roderick James WWI Roderick was born on May 22, 1884 in Whitewood, Saskatchewan. He was the son of Edward and Caroline Sharpe. Roderick enlisted in the Army in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on January 4, 1916 with the 226th Overseas Battalion and served with the 27th Battalion Canadian Infantry during World War I. Roderick was awarded the Star Service Badge, Victory Medal, British War Medal and the 1914-1915 Star. He married Caroline Clara Dahl on February 9, 1910 and had seven children. Roderick was very proud of his only living son, Sergeant Major James Milton Sharpe who served in World War II. Roderick was a farming laborer and lived in Portage la Prairie, MB his entire life. Roderick passed away in 1963 at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg. SHEREMET, Bert WWII Bert was born in Poland and joined the Army in 1943 after immigrating to Canada to Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was with the Lake Superior 2nd Division and took his basic training in Petawawa, ON. He was there for about three months before going to Halifax where he had guard duty for a couple months. At that point, during World War II, he was shipped overseas to the front lines in Holland. He spent three and a half weeks, first equipped with a bren gun and then with a basic rifle and he was shot in the neck while he was taking cover in a trench. It was a glancing blow but enough to hospitalize him. In 1944, Bert and about a dozen others were flown back to Canada and home to Winnipeg. Bert had three children from a previous marriage. After the war, he was a welder, inspector and ran his own welding shop. He is retired, currently resides in Winnipeg with his partner Florence Borsos, and is a Member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. SHOTT, Fred WWII Fred was born in 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Winnipeg Rifles during World War II. He trained and served in Canada at the rank of Private until his discharge in 1943 due to a disability resulting from a very serious accident. He received the enlistment medal and lived with his disability until his passing in 1998. Fred was very proud of his service and being a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Slovak Branch 129 for more than thirty years.
