211 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SCOTT, Irving Wilfred WWII Irving was born in Baldur in April 1924, the son of Wilf and Mary Scott. He enlisted in Winnipeg, trained at Shilo, Fort Osborne, was stationed at Kingston and served overseas with the 1st Canadian Scottish Regiment. He went to Normandy on D-Day and saw action in France, Belgium and Holland. He was wounded in Germany in February 1944 and recuperated in Holland. He married Elizabeth Ramsay of Dominion City and they had three children: Rhonda, James and Perry. Irving was employed as superintendent of Good Roads and they resided at Steinbach, Manitoba. SHARP, Edward S. FENIAN RAIDS Edward was born in Ireland in 1852 on the Red River. He was a Private with the 3rd Victory Rifles of Canada and served in Canada. He served the 1866-1870 Fenian Raids with Captain Newcombe in 1870 and was imprisoned at Fort Garry by Riel at the same time as Thomas Scott. Edward received the Canada General Service Medal. He married Caroline Gibeau in 1873 and had seven children. Edward is the father of Private Roderick James Sharpe (WWI) and grandfather of Sergeant Major James Milton Sharpe (WWII). After Caroline’s death, he married Mary Jane Burden on November 16, 1899 and had four more children. Edward worked as a labourer, freighting, burning lines and farming for many years while living in Whitewood, SK. He moved south of the Assiniboine River in 1880 where he spent the remainder of his life. Edward passed away on February 3, 1932. SHARPE, James Milton “Jim” WWII Jim was born on August 14, 1920 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and was the only son of Roderick and Caroline Sharpe. Jim enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on September 11, 1939. He served as a Sergeant Major “C” Company with the RWR and was posted in England in September 1940. He served in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal in January 1944. Jim landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and was wounded in action during the Invasion of Normandy and received two Wound Stripes Gold Medals on July 4, 1944 and October 10, 1944. Jim’s date of discharge was May 25, 1945. He married Doris Gladue on May 15, 1954 and they raised ten children on their farm south of Portage la Prairie in the Overhill District. He was a painter at CFB Portage la Prairie and later opened his own painting business “Sharpe Decorating & Painting” as well as running the farm. Jim passed away on October 6, 1990 at the age of seventy and was a member of Legion Branch 65.
