207 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ROOKE, Robert P. “Bert” BOER WAR Bert served under Colonel Sam Steele with the Manitoba contingent of the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment in the Boer War. His activities during enrolment and in service are detailed in a fifty-page account of his experiences written upon his return to Winnipeg. As a former ranch hand on the family homestead in Saltcoats, NWT, Robert enlisted in the cavalry regiment as the youngest, at twenty years of age. He registered as 22 years of age on the advice the doctor after his medical exam. He was the final registrant accepted to service before departure to South Africa. He was the last of this original contingent to pass away. ROZAK, Michael WWII Michael was born in Sec 13-28-23 Mink Creek, Manitoba in 1915. He enlisted in the Navy in July 1942 and served in Canada for Unit V36978 during World War II. He joined as a Stoker 2nd Class and rose to Stoker 1st Class and transferred to the Naval Shore Patrol in 1943. He demobilized on January 9, 1946. He was a member of Gilbert Plains Legion Branch 98 for about nineteen years before he passed away in 1968. RUSTAN, Leonard “Len” WWII Leonard was born in Spalding, Saskatchewan in 1923. In 1943, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas with 440 Squadron on Tactical Service in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was the leading Aircraftsman with Armour Crew of the 440 Squadron, 143 Wing. His duties included loading the guns, attaching bombs and rockets to the Typhoon planes. He was in active service overseas for three years. Leonard was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63 and passed away on October 29, 2016.
