197 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca POIRIER, Jean WWII Jean was born in Lorette, Manitoba in 1922 and joined the Army in 1943. He took basic training in Vancouver and in 1943 went overseas to England, Holland, Germany and France during World War II and was returned to Winnipeg upon discharge in 1944. He married Flora Desrochers in 1957 and they had a son and a daughter. Jean worked for an electrical firm which he eventually bought. He retired in 1976 and resides in Winnipeg. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. POLMARK, John WWII John was born in Pelly, Saskatchewan on May 18, 1924. He joined the Navy in June 1940 as a boy seaman and served in the Pacific and in the Atlantic during World War II. He took signal training course in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. His first posting was to the west coast on a Fish Packet. He was sent to Halifax to board a minesweeper, the HMCS Ingonish, this was the Newfie-Derry run. They also traveled to Russia, Gibraltar, and Malta in the Mediterranean. He returned in 1945 and worked for Northern Electric, CN, and Trans Canada Pipelines. He was a member of the Portage la Prairie Legion Branch for 47 years, rising to be President of the Branch in 1989. John passed away on September 22, 1997. POPE, Douglas Richard WWII Douglas was born in London, England, the son of Phillip and Margaret Pope. He married Anne Holland in May 1945. He worked for N.E. Preston from 1929 to 1935. He returned to England and enlisted at Chadwell Heath, Essex and served in North Africa and Europe. In the last war, he had three brothers and two sisters serving. His father was in the home guard and his mother worked on air raid precautions. They were one of millions of families who served at home and abroad. Six years is a long time. Douglas was a member of the Legion Branch 55 in Woodstock, ON where he was a store keeper.
