191 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca OWENS, Carlyle Demille “Lyle” WWII Lyle was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on July 31, 1918. He enlisted in the 17th Reconnaissance Regiment of the 17th Duke of York Canadian Hussars (Montreal) on March 18, 1943. After basic training at the Fort Garry Barracks and Reconnaissance training in Dundurn, Saskatchewan, Lyle left Canada for England in October 1943 in preparation for the Allied invasion of Europe. Their regiment fought through England, Belgium, Holland, France and Germany during World War II. Lyle suffered a gunshot wound in October 1943 to his right leg required hospital care in England for six months. He returned to his regiment in Germany. In April 1945, his armored vehicle was hit from bazooka shelling. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his abdomen and legs. After another hospitalization in England, Lyle was returned home to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He was discharged on August 27, 1945. He found employment at the Manitoba Home for boys and retired from the Manitoba Developmental Center after 36 years of service as 5th Class Power Engineer. He was a member of Major Fawcett Taylor Legion Branch 65 for 44 years. He died on November 30, 2001. OWENS, John Mervin “Merv” WWII John was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on October 9, 1919. He enlisted in the Air Force in Portage la Prairie in March 1941 and served on the west coast of Canada and in England during World War II. He was discharged at Winnipeg on September 6, 1945. LAC JM “Merv” Owens joined The Royal Canadian Legion on November 9, 1953 and became a Life Member in 1995. John passed away on June 2, 2005. PADDOCK, Eric Charles WWII Eric was born in Staffordshire, England, the son of Charles and Ethel Paddock. Eric enlisted in Vancouver in 1940, trained at Debert and served overseas from July 1942 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Ambulance Corps as a mechanic. He married his wife Winnie in England in 1943, returned to Baldur in 1945 and his wife joined him in 1946. Eric passed away in June 1948.
