189 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca OLIVER, Baldur WWII Baldur, the second son of the late Jacobena and Olafur Oliver of Baldur, was born in September 1921. In July 1942, he joined the RCAF and served as a mechanic. Baldur, his wife Gwen, and family resided at Morden, Manitoba where Baldur was employed by Burns Feeds. OSSACHUK, John WWII John was a Stoker with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer. He was torpedoed while traveling between Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland on November 24, 1944. There were no survivors. The U-Boat U-1228 had been sent into the Gulf of St. Lawrence but was having snorkel. They were headed back to Germany for repairs when they came upon the Shawinigan and sank her. His final resting place is unknown; however his name is listed at Panel 12 on the Halifax Memorial in Halifax, Nova Scotia. OSTASH, Mike J. WWII Mike was born in Strathclair, Manitoba in 1916. He enlisted in the Army on July 5, 1943 in Winnipeg. He served with the #10 DD Royal Canadian Artillery (C Pro C) in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe during World War II. Mike was discharged from the service to return to civilian life on demobilization on April 9, 1946 in Winnipeg. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He has been a member of Kelowna Legion Branch 26 for six years.
