185 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca NIMIK, Ted PEACETIME Ted was born in Winnipeg, MB on June 17, 1931. At Earl Grey Junior High School, he was a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) Cadet Corps. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers at age fourteen, and then transferred to 17 Canadian Provost Corps Company in 1947. He advanced through the ranks to be commissioned as a Captain and served in the Supplementary Reserves until 1981. He served with the Winnipeg Police Department from 1953 to 1978, when he was ordained as an Anglican Priest and served as Chaplain at CFB Masset. In 1982, Ted was sent to Taber, AB as Parish Priest where he also served as Padre for the 18th Field Artillery Regiment in Lethbridge as well as Chaplain at CFB Suffield. Ted returned to Winnipeg in 1990 and served as Executive Director of the West Broadway Community Ministry until 2000. While at West Broadway, he was the Parish Priest for Anglican Churches in Hallock, Minnesota, Ridgeville, and Emerson, MB for three years. In 1995, Ted became the Priest-in-Charge at St. Peters Anglican Church in Dynevor for five years, and then became Honorary Assistant at St. Saviours Anglican Church in Winnipeg until the present. Ted met his wife, Sandy Lindberg, in Winnipeg in 1960 and married in 1990. Ted is a Life Member with 35 years’ service, and has been with MBNWO Command and Henderson Highway Branch Padre for many years. NORDMAN, Carl Herbert WWII Carl was born in Cypress River, the son of Gudmundur and Sigurbjorg. He enlisted at Fort Osborne, trained at Camp Shilo and was stationed at Truro, Nova Scotia. He went overseas with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles to Normandy on D-Day and into Belgium, Holland and Germany. He married Leita Jane Campbell on February 7, 1952. They had two children, Calvin and Cathy, and resided in Brandon. OAKLEY, Pam WWII Pam was born in London, England in 1924 and joined the British Air Force in 1943. She served as a waitress during World War II until she was recruited to Ralph Reader’s “Gang Show”, a group of women who put on shows to entertain the troops stationed around England and France. Ralph apparently liked the way she handled herself waitressing and saw some comedic talent in Pam’s nature and she loved to entertain. Pam married Ernie Oakley in 1942 after she met him in training. They had two sons with one living in Winnipeg where Pam is residing. She has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43.
