She enlisted in the Air Force and served as a cook in Ottawa during World War II. She received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Olga passed away in 2005. NICKELS, Howard William WWII Howard was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on November 20, 1920. His father was a World War I Veteran so when World War II was raging, Howard decided to enlist. He joined the Canadian Army on March 2, 1944 and was sent overseas and served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was discharged in October 1946. Upon his return to Portage la Prairie, he worked as a Stationary Engineer at MacDonald Airport, Aggasiz Centre for Boys and Manitoba Developmental Centre. He and his wife, Kay, raised four children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Major Fawcett Taylor Branch 65 in Portage la Prairie for forty years until his passing on April 25, 1984. NICKELS, Howard BOER WAR & WWI Howard was born in Stroud, Gloustershire, England on January 13, 1878, the son of a travelling minister. Howard lied about his age and joined the Imperial Army of England at the age of sixteen with the 1st Wiltshire Regiment. He served most of that tour of duty in India in the Indian Campaign in the Punjab Frontier from 1895 to 1898 and then the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. Through the Veteran’s Act, he was given the opportunity to come to Canada and settled in Pinawa, MB where he worked as a telegrapher at the Pinawa Power Dam that was being constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway. World War I had begun and Howard decided to enlist on March 16, 1916 with the 183rd Battalion. He was given the rank of Sergeant, the rank that he held with the Imperial Army. His tour took him to England, France and Germany. When Howard returned to Manitoba after the war, and because of his attained rank of Sgt. Major, the CPR offered him a position as telegrapher and baggage agent in Portage la Prairie. Once Major Fawcett Taylor Legion Branch 65 was established, Howard was President in 1931 and a member for forty years. He and his wife raised four children and remained in Portage la Prairie until his passing on December 24, 1968.
