He tried to enlist in the Navy at age seventeen but was denied until a year later in 1944. His training took place in Ottawa, Cornwallis, and Halifax where he was aboard an American Destroyer HMS Niagara and he patrolled the North Atlantic during World War II. He loaded a four-inch cannon aboard the ship and couldn’t see where the shells were headed, but kept loading as instructed. They didn’t issue earplugs and when Andy returned home after the war, a doctor at Deer Lodge informed him he was losing his hearing. As a result, he has worn a hearing aid since his early twenties. Andy married Lorna Sutherland and they raised a son and a daughter. He worked at the CNR until age sixty. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. MOIR, Arthur H. “Art” WWII Art was born in the RM of Whitehead in 1919, the youngest of five children. His two older brothers enlisted - Bill in the Air Force and Tom in the Army. Art stayed home to help his dad farm until 1944 when he took his training with the Winnipeg Rifles. He served in Canada during World War II until his discharge in 1946. He was a member of Griswold Legion Branch 112. Art passed away in 2000. MONTGOMERY, Dave PEACETIME Dave was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1948 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1965 and served in Canada during Peacetime. He trained in St. Jean, Quebec for ten weeks and began a road well-travelled. After St. Jean he went to Clinton, Ontario and then to Camp Borden and back to St. Jean for more instructions. He returned to Moose Jaw, but went on to Clinton again, and then went back to St Jean for the third time. Dave finished his five-year term in Cold Lake, ON. He worked in the “Rations” department until 1970, and then worked in the shipping and receiving departments until his retirement in Winnipeg. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43.
