177 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McRUER, Hugh W. PEACETIME Hugh was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1941. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Halifax, Nova Scotia and in the Atlantic region, as a Fleet Meteorologist. Hugh has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for a total of 34 years, thirteen of which were with Boissevain Legion Branch 10. MILLER, Bernie E. RCMP Bernie was born in Vernon, British Columbia on July 1, 1940. He enlisted in the RCMP on January 3, 1961 in Ottawa completing ten months of training, six of which were equitation. He served in Dauphin, MB from 1961 to 1962; Thompson, MB from 1962 to 1965; Altona, MB from 1965 to 1968; Thompson again from 1968 to 1970 and The Pas, MB from 1970 to 1973 where the RCMP was investigating the murder case of Betty Osborne. He then served in Crystal City, MB from 1973 to 1976 where he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He served in Treherne, MB from 1976 to 1986 where he was promoted to Sergeant. He met and married his wife in 1982, and two sons were born to this union in 1983 and 1984. He retired from the RCMP in April 1986. All of his service was in Manitoba (D Division) other than training in Ottawa (N Division). He was Municipal Chief of Police for fourteen years from 1986 to 2000 in Winkler, MB. After spending over 39 years of policing, he retired from Winkler Police Services on July 1, 2000. Bernie presently resides in Brandon. His younger son Greg died in a motor vehicle accident in 2002. He has been a member of both Morden and Brandon Legion Branches. MINER, Arthur R. WWII Arthur was born in Winnipeg in 1923 and was just nineteen when he joined the Army in 1942. He was with the Signal Corps in the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, training in England for two years prior to his landing at Juno Beach, Normandy in 1944. Arthur was responsible for delivering messages up and down the lines via Norton motorcycle or Jeep during World War II. Arthur was recently presented with the French Legion of Honour, France’s highest decorative medal. The French Consulate was on hand at the Norwood Legion in Winnipeg to make the presentation, thanking him for his courage and devotion to the ideals of liberty and peace.
