He joined the Air Force in Regina, Saskatchewan and went to Hamilton, Ontario to get his training. He worked the radar sites in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, then a British colony during World War II. He met his wife Isabelle and moved back to Portage la Prairie where he lived until his death in August 2013. He was a member of the Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65. McPHERSON, John C. WWII John was born in Lansing, Michigan, USA on August 14, 1922. He moved to Roseisle, Manitoba with his parents, Bill and Mina McPherson. He joined the Army in Winnipeg with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and served during World War II. He transferred to the Winnipeg Grenadiers on October 9, 1941 and left for overseas on October 27, 1941. His company was captured on Christmas Day 1941 and held as prisoners in several different prison camps in Hong Kong and Japan. He would never talk about life in these camps after he arrived home in 1945. He later joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Engineers and was stationed at Camp Shilo. In 1953, he was killed in an auto accident, leaving behind his wife, Mary, and four daughters. His life of terrible dreams had ended. McPHERSON, Roderick W. PEACETIME Roderick was born in Roseisle, Manitoba on September 23, 1931 to Mina and Bill McPherson. He attended school in Roseisle. In 1956, he joined the Army in Winnipeg and was posted to the School of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in Kingston, ON. He was posted to Winnipeg and Camp Shilo during Peacetime. After completing his JR NCO course, Roderick was posted to Ft. Churchill where he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Later postings were at Edmonton and Whitehorse. In 1961, he was posted to Indo-China, was attached to CIC and was stationed in Saigon, South Vietnam; later to Vientiane, Laos and Hanoi. After returning to Winnipeg, he returned to Camp Shilo and remained there until his retirement from the Army. He then went to work in the computer centre at the University of Manitoba and later to operations manager in the computer centre for MB Blue Cross. Roderick retired in July 1992. He has been a member of Carman Legion Branch 18 for 42 years.
