15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca AIKENHEAD, Laurence Lloyd WWII Laurence was born in Wellwood, Manitoba; son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Aikenhead, who operated the general store in Neelin, Manitoba for many years. He enlisted in Winnipeg with the RCAF and was stationed near Blackpool, England. He was reported missing on June 21, 1942 and reported killed on August 15, 1942. His grave is located near Gronigen, Holland. He was awarded the Memorial Cross. Lloyd married Muriel Bell on December 13, 1941. They had one son, Larry, a draftsman with Union Oil in Calgary, Alberta. AITKEN, J. O. “Jim” WWI Jim was born in Rathwell, Manitoba in 1895. His parents were Robert and Jessie and in 1944 he married Etta Beatty. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1916 and was stationed overseas at Aldershot, England and served in France as a driver in the 76th Battery, C.F.A. in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in the 4th Canadian Division Ammunition Corps in France. His duty was to transport ammunition to the front lines in wagons drawn by teams, two or three hitched tandem. Often mules had to be used and their disposition created problems. Jim was wounded in the right forearm at Passchendaele. After recuperation in England, he returned to the front. His unit was kept in France until spring of 1919, returning to Canada in May and was discharged in Montreal on May 27, 1919. Jim passed away in February 1962. AITKENHEAD, Harold PEACETIME Harold was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba in 1936 and enlisted in the Army in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Division as a gunner. He trained as a signaler and in other aspects of electronic communications. He served in Canada during Peacetime. Harold worked the radar line for many years and was discharged in 1956. He married Hillur Paisson in 1963 and they later had two boys. After his service he worked for Canadian Aviation, Standard Aero and security for explosives in Gimli, MB. He also worked as an electrical foreman in Gypsumville and a contract inspector in Portage la Prairie. He was at Winnipeg’s 17th Wing and was the President of UNDE (Union National Defense Employees). Harold retired in 1994 and was an independent electrical contractor until 2000. He resides in Winnipeg.
