He enlisted in the Auxiliary reserves during high school, and trained in Beausejour, Manitoba as a radar operator with the 2402 AC & W. In 1961, NORAD implemented computerization as an occupational specialty, but eliminated it all across Canada. Norman joined the American Air Force in 1965 and served four years before his discharge. He became interested in writing and wrote several articles on the military. He was a member of the following associations: Canadian Aviation Historical Society, American Aviation Historical Society, 500 Wing, RCAF Association of Canada, Royal Military Institute of Manitoba, 12th Tactical Fighter Wing Association, Canadian Vietnam Veterans of America and Legion House Museum. Norman is retired in Winnipeg. MARANCHUK, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Sifton, Manitoba on July 21, 1922 and resided in Grandview, MB. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 21, 1941 from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He served in England during World War II. He was stationed overseas with a rank of LAC. He was discharged at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on September 9, 1945 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After discharge from the RCAF, Bill moved to Flin Flon, MB where he gained employment at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company. He joined the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League, later known as The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 73, in July 1947 and later would serve on the Executive of Branch 73 as membership chair. He was a member of Flin Legion Branch 73 for 45 years. Bill married Elizabeth “Betty” Maranchuk in Flin Flon on September 24, 1949 and they had three daughters: Cheryl, Brenda and Bonnie. Bill passed away in December 1992. MARTIN, Philip E. WWII Philip, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth S. Martin, was born on February 12, 1925 at Baldur. He enlisted in the RCAF at Brandon in 1943, trained at Camp Borden and Debert. He transferred to the Army in 1945 and was discharged in Winnipeg in 1946. In 1955, he re-enlisted in the RCAF, stationed in Winnipeg. He married on August 21, 1948. Philip and Jeanne had five daughters and a son.
