135 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca IWANONKIW, Peter WWII Peter was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1917. He joined up with the 10th Infantry Brigade of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division with the Lincoln Welland Regiment and served in Germany, the Netherlands and Holland during World War II. Peter’s third child was born in November 1944 and Peter went overseas in January 1945. Private Iwanonkiw was a citizen soldier. He was at the Hochwald Gap in 1945. Peter was a member of the Fort William Legion Branch 6 and passed away in 1993. JARVIS, Ronald “Ron” PEACETIME Ron was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1943. He joined the Army in 1961 and retired with the rank of Sergeant in 1989. He was a steel engineer and heavy equipment operator. He went to Germany from 1962 to 1965 and then back again in 1969-1972. In between, he was in Chilliwack, BC, Val-Cartier, Quebec and also Egypt for six months for a UN tour. He was stationed in Shilo, Manitoba for his last three years and then settled in Abbotsford, BC to work for the City of Abbotsford as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in January 2008. He currently resides in Abbotsford with his partner Evelyn Yuzik. He has been a member of Abbotsford Legion Branch 15 for thirty years. JAWORSKI, Stan WWII Stan was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1928. He joined the Merchant Navy in 1944 and did his basic training in Nova Scotia where he was instructed in gunnery and lifeboatsman duties. He served in Canada and on the High Seas during World War II. Stan was an Ordinary Seaman and took care of quarters. He went to Vancouver and then on to England, but as they were crossing the ocean, the war ended so he returned to Vancouver as a 3rd Mate. He went to Australia for a bit and then back to Vancouver and left the Navy in 1945. Stan married Yvonne Orieux in 1946 and they both reside in Winnipeg. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43.
