129 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HOWELL, Delorie WWII Delorie was born in Roland, Manitoba, the son of Jim and Eva Howell. He enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Fort Garry, Shilo, Vernon and MacDonald. Delorie had embarkation leave twice and then the war ended. He married Erna Betty Giesbrecht in January 1950 and they lived at Killarney where he was employed as Superintendent of the Turtle Mountain School Division. They had four children: Robert, Gary, Tim and Don. HOWES, Ronald E. “Ron” PEACETIME Ron was born in Penrhiwceiber, South Wales, UK in 1932. He joined the British Army in 1950 and trained at Aldershot, Hants, Yeovil, Somerset, and Houndstone Camp. He completed various military training courses including Driver, Dispatch Rider and Air Dispatch training. He was then employed teaching new recruits how to drive military vehicles. Ron was transferred to Formby, Yorkshire, in Northern England and then back to Yeovil where he was the 6th Battalion RASC Commanding Officer’s driver. Ron demobilized in 1952 but continued to serve in the British Territorial Army as a Sapper in the Corps of Royal Engineers until his release in 1957. Ron immigrated to Winnipeg in 1957, where he worked at Bristol Aerospace, Winnipeg Transit, hauled freight, and City of Winnipeg in the Civic Properties Department until his retirement in 1997. Ron met his wife Anne Melven in Winnipeg and married in 1995. Ron has a son and a daughter from a previous marriage, Kimberly and Sandra and Anne has two sons from a previous marriage, Wayne and David. Ron is a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion and has been an active member of Henderson Highway Legion Branch 215 for 59 years. Ron was part of a group of Legion members who helped build the branch in the present location in 1961-1962. HUNTER, Clayton J. WWII Clayton was born in Elphinstone, Manitoba on May 11, 1920. He graduated high school in 1937 and joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on July 17, 1941. He shipped out to England and then to France in August 1944 and fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Clayton was the radio operator credited with saving many lives due to his coolness under enemy fire, according to comrades in the Camerons. He returned to Canada in August 1945 and was discharged on October 10, 1948. He attended the University of Manitoba in 1946-47 and was a postmaster from 1948 to 1975. Clayton was active in community affairs, a Legion member, a Justice of the Peace and school trustee. He married Hazel Hyde in 1945 and had a daughter, Valerie. Hazel passed away in 2003. Valerie and her husband reside in Shoal Lake as does Clayton. He is active in golfing and curling and was features as sportsman of the week in 2016. He has been a member of Elphinstone Legion Branch 175, Brandon Legion Branch 3 and Shoal Lake Legion Branch 72 for 68 years.
