127 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HERON, Kenneth WWII Kenneth was born on March 4, 1922 in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 22, 1942 and rose to the rank of Flying Officer. Kenneth did some of his training at Fingal training base in Ontario. He served in Canada and in England during World War II. While on a night bombing mission from England to a target near Calais, France on July 24-25, 1944, the aircraft he was on was presumably shot down on the English Channel. He was one of seven ‘souls on board’ who did not return. Kenneth was 22 years old and at the time was assigned as a bomber officer on that flight. His name is acknowledged at the Runnymede Memorial cemetery in Surrey, England. HOLDER, Richard Ross WWII Ross was born in Scarth, Manitoba, the son of Dick and Emily Holder (section foreman in Baldur for many years). Ross enlisted in Winnipeg with the RCAF and trained at Toronto and St. Thomas. He served from December 1941 to February 1945 and was stationed at Comox, British Columbia until August 1945. He married Madge Smith on February 21, 1942 and they later had one son, Richard. They lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Ross was employed as an Electrical Instructor at Red River Community College. HOWARD, Arthur “Art” WWII Arthur was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the RCNVR and served onboard HMCS MacDonald, HMCS Chignecto and HMCS New Glasgow in Canada and on the High Seas during World War II. He served as a Leading Seaman from July 1941 to November 1945. Art spent 1,065 days overseas with a total qualifying service of 1,497 days and was honourably discharged as a result of demobilization. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star with France and Germany Clasp, Pacific Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. After the war, he returned to Winnipeg and resided in St. Vital driving buses for Greyhound Lines of Canada until retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Vital Branch 16 for over forty years. Art passed away in 1992.
