125 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HEAVER, Sydney C. “Syd” WWII Sydney was born in Glenora, Manitoba, the son of Herbert and Catherine Heaver. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1942, trained at Victoria and was stationed at Prince Rupert and Woodstock, Ontario. He served overseas in England and went on to France, Belgium, Holland and Germany arriving back in Canada in November 1945, and was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1946. He married Norma Kay on February 18, 1946 and they had two sons, Barry and Grant. Syd farmed at Glenora and was a member of the Baldur Legion Branch 108. HELTEN, Clarence J. WWII Clarence was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota, USA in 1919. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served in Canada during World War II until 1946. He was trained as a Hospital Dietician and cooked at Camp Shilo, Manitoba. In 1943, he was sent to Whitewater (POW) Camp in Riding Mountain National Park to cook for seventy Prisoners of War. Clarence was later sent to Halifax to be posted overseas, but the war ended and he was returned to Camp Shilo. He was a member of Oak Lake Legion Branch 79 for 56 years. Clarence passed away in 2009. HENDERSON, William PEACETIME William was born in Ashville, North Carolina, USA in 1944 and joined the US Air Force in 1963. He had one Tour of Duty which was to Okinawa Island, Japan during Peacetime in 1964-1965 and upon return was stationed at the base in Grand Forks until he was discharged in 1967. He married Patricia Martin and they have one girl. He played basketball from 1967 to 1971 for the St. Andrew Saints and worked as a truck driver, sold furniture at Elliot Lake and was a teacher’s assistant with the Winnipeg School Division for 39 years. He has retired and resides in Winnipeg.
