117 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HADLAND, Henry A. WWII Henry was born in 1917 and raised on farms in the Birtle and Shoal Lake municipalities. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 11, 1941 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Germany during World War II. He was stationed at RCAF Digby, England with 127 Wing Supermarine Spitfire Fighter Squadron. Henry was an airfield and flying controller sent over to France after the D-Day invasion. The Squadron was stationed near Brussels, Belgium when the armistice was signed ending hostilities in Europe. He was sent back to England in August 1945 and eventually Canada, where he was discharged on October 25, 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 19391945 Star, Defence Medal, and France and Germany Star. He returned to his love of farming and married Marjory Dunn on January 30, 1965. He was a quiet man who enjoyed curling, friends, family, farming and bridge. Henry passed away on July 7, 2013 and was a member of the Shoal Lake Legion Branch 72. HALLGRIMSON, Albert WWII Albert was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1917, the son of Asgeir and Christianna Hallgrimson. He enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Brandon, Manitoba. He served overseas in England, Sicily, Italy, France and Holland. He married Evelyn Johnson of Baldur in November 1955. They had three children: Lorne, Heather and Sharon. Albert farmed in the Glenboro District. HALLGRIMSON, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in Cypress River, the son of Thorstein and Valgerdur Hallgrimson. He lived at Cuthbertson, Montana, USA and was employed as a service station operator. He married Beatrice Benson in Edmonton, Alberta on November 11, 1949. They had four children: Heather, Mark, Valerie and Margot. He enlisted at Brandon and trained at St. Thomas, Ontario and was stationed at Brandon No. 12SFTS and served overseas at Skipton-on-Swale, England and at Odenberg, Germany.
