113 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GOYMAN, Joe WWII Joe was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II in 1941. He was stationed in Winnipeg for the first month then was sent to the naval base in Squamish, British Columbia. He trained aboard a converted passenger ship, a war ship named the Prince Robert. His mission was to take the Grenadiers to Hong Kong and after doing so they headed back to BC and eventually to Newfoundland. He trained on the HMS Stratford and the HMS Mahone, which were minesweepers used for escort duty. Joe became a Chief Petty Officer during his time in the service. The Grenadiers he took to Hong Kong all became POWs until the war ended. Joe married Erica Restau and had two boys from a previous marriage. He worked at CNR until his retirement in 1987. The Goymans reside in Winnipeg. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. GRANTHAM, Bill WWII Bill Grantham, the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Grantham, was born in Gladstone and moved to Baldur with his parents in 1922. He enlisted in the Army on January 4, 1940, going overseas in May that year. He arrived home on February 26, 1945 and took up residence in Winnipeg upon his discharge. GREEN, Alfred WWII Alfred was born in Neelin, the son of Albert and Gertrude Green. He enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Shilo and in British Columbia and served overseas in England, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He held the rank of Lieutenant with the Infantry. He married Louise Skelton in November 1939. They had eight children: Wayne, Wilma, Ken, Freda, Brenda, Bruce, Lorraine and Clifford.
