105 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FREDERICKSON, Valdimar L. WWII Valdimar was born in Glenora, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willian Frederickson. He enlisted at Fort Osborne, was stationed at Petawawa before going overseas to No. 1 CARU England and on to Continental Europe where he saw combat with 12 RCA and spent one year with the Occupation Army in Germany. He married Ruth Lord on June 30, 1950. They had a son Edmund Christian and resided at Red Lake where Valdimar was an Electronic Technician with Bell Telephone Company. FRENCH, Cecil WWII Cecil was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. French of Greenway. He joined the RCASC at Winnipeg on his twentieth birthday on December 20, 1942. He trained at Winnipeg, Red Deer and Debert before going overseas on September 22, 1942. GARAND, Robert “Bob” WWII Bob was born in Storthoaks, Saskatchewan in 1912. He enlisted in the Navy and served onboard HMCS LCI(L)-118 in Canada, on the High Seas and in England during World War II. The LCI(L)-118 had the distinction of leading the landing flotilla into Juno Beach, Normandy on the first wave of D-Day on June 6, 1944. The Landing Craft received hull damage from the mines and was stuck amidst the chaos at Juno Beach from 11am to 7 pm. On the return across the channel, the pumps had to run at full power to keep the craft from sinking. There was little sleep that night. He was awarded the Mid Oak Leaf and the French Legion of Honour – Knight. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19. Bob passed away in 2016.
