93 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HOWARD, Frederick J. WWI Frederick was born in 1894 in Newdale, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served in France during World War I. He enlisted in Winnipeg on January 6, 1916 with the rest of the boys from Newdale in the 107th Overseas Battalion CEF. He embarked from Halifax on September 18, 1916 on SS Olympia and arrived in Liverpool on September 25. He proceeded overseas to Witley Camp on February 24, 1917 in Boulogne, France. Fred was part of the Canadian Section, 3rd Echelon 107th Pioneers when he was killed in action whilst returning from a working party near Neuville St.-Vaast on the night of June 24/25, 1917. A shell exploded on the top of the communication trench immediately above him. He was instantly killed by a portion of the shell which struck him on the head. A memorial plaque and scroll (Ser #801148) went to his father, John Howard and Memorial Cross to his mother, Grace Howard in Newdale. Fred is buried at Aux Rietz Military Cemetery southwest of the village of Neuville-St-Vaast, 3 ¾ miles north of Arras, France. HUDSON, Herbert T. “Bert” WWII Bert was born in East Bay, Manitoba in 1921. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1942 and trained at Fort Osborne barracks with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He later trained in Nova Scotia. He went to the United Kingdom in January of 1943 where he was transferred to the 48th Highland Regiment. He served with that regiment in Italy and later Western Europe until the end of the war. While serving in Italy, he contracted malaria which plagued him for the rest of his life. Bert married Phyllis Jackson. They farmed in the East Bay district and raised their family of six girls and two boys. Bert was a long-time member of the Ste. Rose Legion Branch 232. He passed away in Ste. Rose in 1998. IRELAND, Edward C. “Ed” WWII Ed was born in 1922 in Binscarth, Manitoba. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He served with the Saskatoon Light Infantry in Canada, England, Italy and Germany during World War II. He was posted to England then sent to Africa. They landed in the invasion of Italy and on to Germany to the end of the war. He served in the occupation of Germany until he broke his finger and was sent to hospital in England then sent home demobilized in 1946. He farmed and his hobby was collecting antique tractors and other machinery. He operated at reunions in Canada and in the United States of America until he retired. Edward was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch for fifteen years before he passed away in 1985.
