83 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GREENAWAY, Gordon H. WWI Gordon was born in Hollan Center, Ontario in 1895. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on February 29, 1916. Gordon embarked in Halifax on September 18, 1916 and arrived in England on SS Olympic on September 25, 1916. The 107th Pioneer Canadian Engineers disembarked in Boulogne, France on February 25, 1917 and fought at Vimy. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge in the field on February 29, 1918. The unit disbanded on May 28, 1918 and absorbed into the 2nd Canadian Engineers Battalion. Gordon was part of the battalion to enter Germany. On April 29, 1919, he embarked on SS Baltic Liverpool for Canada. Gordon took discharge in Hamilton on May 9, 1919. He visited with family in the Toronto/Owen Sound area before heading west to farm with his father near Newdale, Manitoba. In 1925, Gordon headed north, settling in the Yellowknife NWT, trapping, fishing and guiding along the Mackenzie River for the rest of his life. He was a Life Member of the Vincent Massey Legion Branch 164 where a plaque hangs in his honour. Gordon is buried in the Veterans plot in Yellowknife. GREENAWAY, Hampton W. WWI Hampton was born in Holland Center, Ontario in 1892. He enlisted in the Army on January 6, 1916 in Winnipeg, MB and embarked from Halifax on September 18, 1916 on SS Olympia. He arrived in Liverpool on September 15, 1916 and disembarked in Boulogne, France on February 24, 1917. He earned his Medal for Bravery in the Field on August 15, 1917 at the Battle for Hill 70 near Lens with the 107th Pioneer Canadian Engineers when he showed great dexterity and skill in tending to wounded. Under intense hostile fire of shrapnel, H.E. and gas, his devotion to duty under very trying circumstances was undoubtedly the means of saving a great many lives and the number of men he personally saved were too numerous to count. Hampton was appointed L/Cpl in field on October 20, 1917 and was awarded the good conduct badge on January 6, 1918. He was then appointed Acting Corporal with pay on February 1, 1918 and promoted to Corporal on September 2, 1918. He was struck off strength on January 11, 1919 and he returned to Canada on March 10, 1919 arriving in Halifax on March 18. He returned to farm at Newdale, Manitoba. He was a Life Member of the Newdale Legion Branch before he passed away in 1965. GREENWOOD (POPLE), Lillian WWII Lillian was born on September 13, 1925 in Cartwright, Manitoba. She was the daughter of Ben and Zara Pople (Du Bédat). She enlisted in the Department of National Defence Army on November 11, 1943 during World War II. Her regimental number was W.100560 and her rank was Private. Lillian was discharged on October 24, 1945. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion – Strathcona Branch 150. Lillian passed away on January 18, 2010 in Sherwood Park, Alberta. There was a Legion Honour guard at her memorial service.
