WWII George was born on October 4, 1919 at the farm home of his parents, Alexander and Jeannie Gerrard of Menzie, Manitoba. In 1940, at the age of twenty, George joined the Army and enlisted with The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. In April of 1941, they sailed for England and spent time at New Haven and Petworth. Later, George transferred to the Canadian Provost Corp to be with his brother Joseph Gerrard. George and Joseph were then sent to Italy where they were based at Salerno. In 1944, the troops transferred to Central Europe. They drove from Naples, Italy to Leghorn, Italy where they boarded ships for Marseilles, France. George’s unit was based at Ath, Brussels. He arrived in Winnipeg on December 1, 1945 and married Helga Olafson in January of 1946. He returned to the only occupation he had ever wanted – farming. Helga and George raised six children. George was active in the Strathclair community for many years. GILBART, Lloyd M. WWII Lloyd was born in 1924 and was raised on the family farm near Elkhorn. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and took pilot training. Following graduation he was a staff pilot during World War II. He was discharged in June of 1945 as a Flying Officer. Lloyd operated a Ford dealership in Thunder Bay, Ontario. GILBART, Stanley W. WWI Stanley was born near Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Army in 1915 at the age of eighteen. He was assigned to the 190th Battalion. He served in World War I in England and in France. He was wounded in action and was hospitalized for an extended period. After the war, he returned to Elkhorn to farm.
