He enlisted in the Navy and served in Canada during World War II. He was stationed in Shelburne, Nova Scotia in the Royal Canadian Navy. He married Annie on June 29, 1944, and a few days later, leaving behind all family, they left for Shelburne where they started their new married life together. Thomas was 23 years old when his first child was born a year later on May 1, 1945. When he became a father, he was extremely happy with his new role as a Dad, and he excitedly took everyone he could find to see his new daughter, Karen, at the maternity ward. He remained, over the years, a wonderful father to Karen and his next two children, Tommy and Jane, who were born a few years later. When Karen was ten days old, Thomas carried her down to the harbour where he showed her the U-boats. Over the years, he would remind her that when she was a baby, she had witnessed the U-boats in the Harbour. History was in the making and she was there to see it.
