69 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FLYNN, William James “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Winnipeg in 1916. He attended Lord Roberts School. He began an apprenticeship with the CNR as a Machinist. Bill was sent to Port Arthur for some apprenticing at their CNR Shop. John Cutts was working at the CNR and took bill home for a home-cooked meal. There he met his future wife Marjorie Cutts. World War II broke out and Bill was stationed in Shelburne, Dartmouth and Halifax. He served in Canada and on the high seas onboard HMCS Chippawa, HMCS Naden, HMCS Stadacona and HMCS Shelburne. He and Marjorie married in Halifax in 1942. Bill was Chief of Machine Shop and in shore establishments. After the war, Bill returned to the CNR in Winnipeg as a Machinist. In 1963, working for Bertram’s & Sons, Bill moved his family to Dundas, Ontario, then to Toronto working for Sandvik Tools. He always had a story to tell and knew everyone. There was nothing he could not fix. Bill passed away in 1996 in Toronto suffering from Alzheimer’s. Bill was loved very much. He was a Mason. FRANKLIN, Douglas Howard WWII Douglas was born in Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in May of 1942 and trained as a Stoker. Following training, he was posted aboard H.M.C.S. Kokanee on convoy duty running between St. John’s, Newfoundland and Londonderry, Ireland. He served on the High Seas during World War II. He was discharged in November of 1945. FRANKLIN, Maurice “Moe” WWII Moe was born on March 19, 1922 and was raised in Elkhorn, Manitoba. In 1942, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. He served on convoy duty on ships on the North Atlantic during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. Maurice passed away in 1997.
