61 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DUXBURY, Thomas BOER WAR Thomas was born in Manchester, England in 1875 and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1887. He joined the Cavalry in 1899 and went to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. After the war, he returned to Imperial, SK in 1911, he began farming north of Elkhorn, MB. Thomas passed away on November 5, 1942. DUXBURY, Thomas WWII Thomas was born in Elkhorn, MB on July 2, 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, trained in Canada and graduated from the Bombing and Gunnery school in St. Thomas, ON as a wireless air gunner with the rank of Sergeant. In early 1941, he proceeded overseas to take operational training. He joined a crew flying heavy bombers against heavily defended targets in Germany and was promoted to Flight Sergeant during this time. On his 21st mission, his aircraft was shot down while on a raid over Bremen on October 12, 1941. Thomas was reported missing in action and later presumed dead. In 1987 the Province of Manitoba named Lake Duxbury after him. EGGLETON, Charles R. WWII Charles was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1910. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed on Canada’s West Coast. He served with the 3rd Repair Depot in Calgary and with the Western Air Command in Tofino during World War II. He was part of a team of men whose job it was to ensure that needed equipment and supplies got safely and quickly shipped out to isolated commands at both fighters and bomber air fields and rescue bases at the RCAF. Being responsible for huge amounts of varied and important materials was a major undertaking. They also coordinated the supplying of service materials to contracting companies that were hired by the RCAF.
