55 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DEARLE (KUSTRA), Helen WWII Helen was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1917. She enlisted in the Army and served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in Canada and in England during World War II. She received the Defence Medal, CVSM and Clasp and War Medal 1939 – 1945. Helen passed away in 1994. DONNELLY, Frank WWI Frank was born in Hartney in 1894. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War I and served in Trenton, Canada with the Royal Flying Corps as Instructor flying “J4” aircraft. His aviator’s certificate was issued by the Royal Aero club of United Kingdom on September 19, 1919. Frank passed away in 1939. DONNELLY, John R. “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1943 until the end of the hostilities of World War II. After final training at HMCS Base Cornwallis and a week on a World War I four stack destroyer, he was drafted to Halifax and to an Algerine mine sweeper HMCS Persian. She still had some sweeping gear on board but had been converted for escort duty and joined on Atlantic convoy group off Newfoundland. In Greenwich, Scotland, Jack joined an advanced party to HMCS Monnow, a frigate being finished in Bristol, England. Monnow went through evolutions (shake down) at Tobermory in Scotland then joined other escorts for convoy duty. Later, he was drafted to HMCS Arnprior in Newfoundland, a castle corvette, after her refit and she proceeded on Atlantic convoy duty. At wars end, and awaiting discharge, he crewed on HMCS Beaverton, an ocean going tug towing ammunition barge out of Halifax and dumping them at sea.
