49 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CRAIK, Murray Clayton WWII Murray was born at Dry River, Manitoba on May 2, 1920, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Craik, long time hotel operators at Baldur. Prior to enlistment, Murray taught school at Antonious, S.D. having completed his education in Baldur. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in May of 1941 at Winnipeg. He trained at Brandon, MB; North Battleford, Saskatchewan; Malton, Ontario and Jarvis, ON as a WO2. He graduated from Rivers, MB as an air bomber, obtaining the rank of Flight Sergeant. He was posted to Charleton, PEI on reconnaissance duty over the Atlantic Ocean. He was sent overseas in September of 1942. He was reported missing and presumed dead in September of 1943 on an overnight raid on Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Craik were later informed that Murray was buried near Munich, Germany. Murray was posthumously cited and in his respect his mother received his “Operational Wings”. CRAMER, Wilfred Playfair WWI Wilfred was born at Baldur, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Cramer Sr. He enlisted in Brandon where he also received his initial training before going to England. He married Gladys Craig on April 7, 1926 and they farmed east of Baldur until his death. CRERAR, Robert S. “Bob” WWII Robert was born in 1920 in Binscarth, Manitoba. Bob joined the Army in 1941 and spent time in Winnipeg, London, Halifax and St. John’s during World War II. He was at Barriefield Camp, Ontario between December 1941 and June 1942, moving on to Camp Borden in July 1942 where he trained as a tank and truck mechanic. Later, there are pictures of him, his comrades and civilians in Caen (Normandy) in August 1944 and at the Canadian Leave Camp in Deauville, France in September 1944. During his time with the RCEME, he repaired vehicles during the Battle of the Scheldt and worked in the Tank Shop in Machelen, Belgium in 1945. After demobilization in 1946, he returned to farm in the Binscarth area. Robert married Jean from Edinburgh, Scottland and raised one daughter and two sons. He was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for fifty years before he passed away in 1996.
