47 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca COWIE, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1921. Joseph joined the Royal Canadian Air force in 1943 and received basic radar training at University of Saskatchewan. He completed his technical training at the very secret base at Clinton, Ontario and passed as a radar technician. He was drafted to Liverpool, England and later served in North Africa and Greece, where his group got involved in the Greek civil war. Later, he was moved to Egypt. He serviced equipment on many aircraft types but mainly Lancaster bombers. He served with the RAF South African Air Service, RCAF Squadron 29 (Mosquitos), RCAF Squadron 221 during World War II. Joseph was a member of the Calgary Legion before he passed away in 2006. COX, Henry E. WWII Henry was born in 1907 on the farm in the Crewe district six miles west of Foxwarren in southern Manitoba. As a young man, he left the farm and headed west, eventually making his home in Jasper, Alberta. He joined the Army in 1939 with the Royal Canadian Engineers 9th Army Troop Company. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was married and had a daughter, Darlene and a son, John. Henry passed away in 1978 and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Jasper Branch 31 for 35 years. COX, Melvin C. “Mel” WWII Mel was born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1926 and took his early schooling in Kelwood, MB and High School in Winnipeg. He volunteered for active service in the Canadian Army in 1944 during World War II. He joined the Lake Superior Regiment “M” in Holland in late February of 1945. He was killed in action on April 13, 1945 while clearing the village of Friesoythe in Germany and is commemorated in the Holton Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. He was the son of Gladys (Kew) and Charles Cox and had two brothers, Harold and Murry and a sister, Helen.
