223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WILLIS, Joseph H. “Joe” BOER WAR & WWI Joe was born in Allington, Wales in 1882. He served in the British Army in South Africa (Boer War) from 1901 to 1902. In 1903, he immigrated to Canada and farmed until 1914 when he joined the Canadian Army (1st Canadian Mounted Rifles) and served during World War I. He attained the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant Major and was severely wounded in 1916 at Vimy Ridge in France. He was repatriated to Canada from England in 1919 after convalescing in England. He became postmaster in Binscarth, Manitoba in 1920 staying on the job until 1949 when he retired to his garden. He was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74. Joe passed away in 1970. WORTHINGTON, Frederick W. WWII Frederick was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1908. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada in England and in France during World War II. Frederick was killed in action in Normandy in 1944. WRIGHT, Alfred J.W. WWII Alfred was born in Holland, Manitoba in 1914. He served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was stationed in England and was badly wounded in the raid on Dieppe during World War II. He married Nora Power, an English war bride, who came to Canada in 1945. They had two daughters. He returned home to Winnipeg in 1946 and trained as a cabinet builder. He worked for Display Fixtures in Winnipeg installing some of the first checkout turntables in Safeway all over Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. He worked there until his retirement at the age of 65. He was divorced from Nora and remarried Travonna Twiss and they moved to Portage la Prairie in 1996 and lived there until their deaths. They are both buried in Boyne Creek Cemetery at Treherne, Manitoba. He was a member of the St James Legion Branch.
