221 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WILLIAMS, Llewellyn L. WWII Llewellyn was born at Foxwarren, Manitoba in on June 4, 1921. He was educated at Foxwarren School, having candled eggs at the local grocery store to earn his grade twelve tuition. For a time, following school, he drove a gravel truck for Widdicombe & Low Bros. Construction when they were building the Trans-Canada Highway in Northern Ontario. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and in 1943 he married Helen Marks of Orillia, ON. He served in Canada and in Great Britain during World War II. His Halifax plane crashed during an electrical storm in Scotland in 1944, and he and his crew are buried in Sleepy Hillock Cemetery in the Scottish Highlands, Montrose, Scotland. Llewellyn was almost 23 years old. He and Helen had no children. WILLIS, Arthur J. “Art” WWII Art was born in Binscarth, Manitoba in 1920. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1940 at Shilo, MB achieving the rank of Lieutenant in the Postal Corps. He served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II before being repatriated to Canada in 1946. He stayed with the post office, serving as postmaster in Binscarth, Neepawa and Flin Flon, MB finally retiring in 1975. He also served as a Lt (R) in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets from 1965 – 1977. He received the OBE, MID, 1939 – 1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, War Medal and 1939 – 1945 C.D. He was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for fifty years. He spent his final retirement years in Binscarth, passing away in 1997. WILLIS, David A. PEACETIME David was born in Binscarth, Manitoba in 1941. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1959 serving in the Engineering Branch aboard the HMCS La Hulloise out of Halifax until 1962. Upon leaving the RCN in 1962, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Safety Systems Technician and served on many bases throughout Canada, retiring in 1993 having attained the rank of Warrant Officer. He received the CD1. He is currently enjoying retirement in Binscarth and wintering in Lakeland, Florida. He has been a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch for 35 years.
