215 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WELSH, Russell WWI Dr. Russell Welsh was born at Baldur, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Welsh. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1918 and served with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps at Tuxedo Barracks. In 1919, he married Laureta Reaux. His second wife Lillian Black, he married in 1936. Their children are Lois and Russell Jr. WHETTER, R.J. Clinton “Clint” WWII Clint was born in Dand, Manitoba in 1919. After completing a degree in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and trained in Canada, England and Scotland. Flight Lieutenant Whetter and his crew were posted to the 425 Alouette Squadron, Tholthorpe Yorkshire and then selected to Pathfinder Force, Gransden Lodge England, flying a total of sixty OPS over Western Europe during World War II. Clint was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his skill, courage and determination. Discharged in May of 1945, he returned home and married Dorothy Keeler and began farming at Dand. Together they raised a family of four and were stalwart members of the community. Clint practiced and promoted soil conservation throughout his farming career for which he was inducted into the Canadian Conservation Hall of Fame and the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame. At 93, Clint continues to be a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, Hartney. WHITE (SKEOCH), Gladys E. WWII Gladys was born on January 12, 1926 in Russell, Manitoba. Private Skeoch was a member of the No. 110 Depot Company, Canadian Women’s Army Corps during World War II from August 24, 1944 to October 3, 1945 when she returned to civil life on demobilization. She served as a parachute packer at CFB Shilo in Shilo, MB. Gladys married Bernard White on June 14, 1947 and together they raised three children on their farm east of Binscarth, MB. She was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74. Gladys passed away on November 8, 2008 at the age of 82.
