207 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TWIGG, Sam WWI Sam was born at Bradfield, Yorkshire, England on October 16, 1888. He came to Canada in 1913 and settled near Elkhorn, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army on January 25, 1916 and was assigned to the 226th Overseas Battery. He served in England and in France during World War I. He was badly wounded in the arm and was hospitalized for some time. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action. When discharged from the Army, Sam and his wife, a British war bride, farmed near Elkhorn until retirement in 1941. Sam passed away on August 5, 1956 and is buried in the Elkhorn Cemetery. VIAU, Armand E. WWII Armand was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 7, 1907 to Clara and Damase Viau and husband to Anna Viau. Armand joined the Merchant Navy at the beginning of World War II and assumed the rank of Private with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, unit # 5, General Hospital. He served in Canada and in England. He was awarded the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal. Private Armand died while rescuing people from a burning building in London on January 29, 1942. He is buried with his brother, Sergeant Joseph R. Viau, in Surry, England at Brookwood Military Cemetery. VIAU, Joseph R. WWII Joseph was born on May 19, 1914 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Clara and Damase Viau. His training started in Brandon, MB on December 20, 1940 in a Tiger Moth. Joseph reached the rank of Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force with over 220 hours of flight time. He served in Canada and in England during World War II. While returning to England, Joseph and three other crew members crashed their Hampden Bomber in Chipping Warden, England on their way back from a bombing mission and passed away on February 14, 1942. He received the War Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Defence Medal. Sergeant Joseph is buried with his Brother, Private Armand Viau, at the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surry, England.
