205 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TODD, Thomas Baron “Tom” WWI Thomas was born at Lachute, PQ on May 12, 1888, the son of Thomas and Marjorie Todd. Tom enlisted in Brandon on January 14, 1915 and served in Britain and France. He was a member of the 45th Battalion – Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in France with the 52nd. He was discharged in Winnipeg on May 17, 1919. While in England he married Florence Davies. They had two children, Beryl Bjornson (Winnipeg) and Stanley (Baldur). Thomas is deceased. TOWLER, Edgar WWII Edgar was raised on a farm north of the village of Manson, Manitoba. He joined the Army early in the war and served initially with the 101st Battery Royal Canadian Artillery. He transferred to the South Saskatchewan Regiment and proceeded overseas. He served in Canada and in France during World War II. Edgar was severely wounded in 1944 while serving in France. He was a member of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58. TRICK, Charles Richard “Dick” WWII Dick was born near Stonewall, Manitoba in 1916. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1939, deploying to Jamaica to carry out garrison duties in 1940, and returning to Winnipeg in August of 1941. He had just enough time to marry Helen (Sheldon) before deploying to Hong Kong in late October. What followed has been well documented, the battle of Hong Kong, the surrender, and then almost four years of beatings and starvation in Hong Kong and Japan for the survivors. Dick was a POW in Hong Kong until January of 1943 when he and many others were shipped off to Japan to act as slave labour in various camps. He survived, returning home in October of 1945 and taking over the family farm from his father. In 1946, he joined the Legion and began a life-long campaign for veterans’ rights. He received the Meritorious Service Medal in 1972 and in 1981, Life Membership. Dick passed away in 1996 and he is buried in Stonewall Cemetery with his comrades.
