201 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SULLIVAN, Francis T. WWII Francis was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1921. He joined the Army on January 3, 1942. He served with the 13th Field Regiment RCA 3rd Division during World War II. He landed at Normandy, France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. His barge was hit by shell fire. Francis was wounded on the Somme River, France in the upper right arm by a German 88. He rejoined his unit to fight at the Scheldt Estuary and Nijmegen, Holland. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, War Medal 1939 – 1945 and the Long Service Medal. Francis was a member of the East End Legion Branch 3 in Brandon, Manitoba for 22 years until he passed away in 1982. TAYLOR, James A. “Jim” WWII Jim was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1925. He enlisted in the Navy and served on the High Seas during World War II. Jim served as a seaman aboard HMCS Rosthern and HMCS Snowberry, both corvettes. These ships were members of the North Atlantic Escort Squadrons that protected heavy laden merchant ships, travelling in convoys of 40 to 70 vessels to England and Europe. There are many records of the heroic actions of these escorts in fighting off German submarines, some successful, some resulting in their own sinking and loss of good men. Jim was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, serving until the end of the hostilities. Jim passed away in 1999. THIESSEN, Paul E. SPECIAL DUTY AREA Paul was born in Crystal Lake, Manitoba in 1955. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy on July 17, 1973. He did basic training at CFB Cornwallis. In December of 1973, he transferred to CFB Borden to train as a mechanic and then transferred to CFB Halifax in May of 1974 to train as a Boatswain. From July 1974 to January 1975, he was stationed on the HMCS Huron and then on the HMCS Gatineau from January 1975 to December 1978. On March 2, 1977, he helped in the rescue of two sailors from the Royal New Zealand Navy and received a commendation. He was honourably released on December 27, 1978. He has been a member of the Castlegar Legion Branch for one year.
