195 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca STEINKE, Fredrich “Fred” WWII Frederich was born on November 19, 1919 in Ridgeville, Manitoba. He joined the Army and after served overseas in England and Germany with the XII Manitoba Dragoons in World War II. After the war, Fred farmed in the Woodmore area of Southern Manitoba until he became ill. He passed away in 1998 and was buried in the Freidenstahl Cemetery. Fred and his wife Linda had three children. STEINKE, Richard W. WWII Richard was born in Emerson, Manitoba on September 12, 1925. He served overseas in World War II with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Charlie Company 13th Platoon, Regiment No. H23957. He served in England, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He served in the Occupational Troops in Germany at #10 Blue Street in Oldenburg, Germany. When he returned to Canada in April of 1946, he was transferred to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He became a professional wrestler in Winnipeg with the proceeds going to the victims of the 1950 flood. Richard passed away in 1967. STEINKE, William “Bill” WWII William was born in Emerson, Manitoba on July 20, 1915. He joined the Army in 1943 with the Lake Superior Tank Regiment. He then transferred to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry prior to going overseas. Bill attended the Military Academy at Kingston, Ontario for two months, focusing on a course on the German language to assist an interpreter for radio reception. Bill was killed in action in Italy on December 21, 1944 and was buried in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery in Italy.
