193 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SNELL, Rupert WWII Rupert was born near the Village of Manson, Manitoba where he attended school. He enlisted in the Infantry during World War II, and after basic training in Canada he proceeded overseas. He was assigned to the South Saskatchewan Regiment. During the Normandy invasion he saw action with his regiment and was severely wounded in 1944. He was invalided home and released from the Army. He continued to live in Manson until he passed away as a result of his war wounds. STANTON, Richard H. WWI & WWII Richard was born in Birtle, Manitoba. He joined the Army in 1915 with the 78th Infantry Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers. He was discharged in July of 1919 from World War I. He joined World War II in 1940 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He enlisted in 10A Veterans Guard and was discharged in 1943. He was wounded in France when a shell landed close to him. It blew him into a shell hole full of water. Richard was a member of the Ladysmith Legion Branch 171 for 27 years until he passed away in 1976. STANTON, William H. “Bert” WWII Bert was born in Treherne, Manitoba on October 31, 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on October 30, 1942. He served in Italy and in Northwest Europe during World War II. He received his discharge on December 11, 1945. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal of 1939 – 1945. He was an active member of the Treherne Legion Branch 120 for 49 years. Bert passed away in January of 1994 and is buried at Bethel Cemetery in Treherne.
