191 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SMALL, Samuel T. WWII Samuel was born in 1908 in Halbrite, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army on December 17, 1940 and trained in Winnipeg for twenty weeks. During that time, on March 1, 1941, he married Elsie Irene Spencer and after a short two weeks together, Ted was sent overseas where he served in Britain, Italy, France, Holland and Germany during World War II. After several weeks as a Gunner, he was transferred to be a cook for the remainder of his service for health reasons. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939 – 1945. Upon discharge, when the war was over on January 19, 1946, he returned home to Dauphin. He joined his wife and lived in Dauphin where his only daughter Margaret May was born on April 16, 1947. On December 1947 he purchased a quarter of land which was five miles west and one mile north of Dauphin where he farmed until his passing on April 27, 1955. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was a big tease and enjoyed life. SNAITH, Roy A. WWII Roy was born in MacGregor, Manitoba in 1921. He volunteered for active service in the Army in 1942 and went overseas with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons and served in Canada, England and in the North West of Europe. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, 1939 – 1945 Star, France and Germany Medal and the Defence Medal. He was discharged in 1946 and took up farming in the Austen area. In later years, he retired from farming and was employed by the Lyles Lumber yard in MacGregor. He now resides in Portage la Prairie, MB. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 110 and the MacGregor Branch for more than fifty years. SNELL, Jack WWII Jack was born and raised near the Village of Manson, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force early in the war and trained as a Radio Mechanic. He served during World War II in England and after the invasion went to France with 139 RECCE Wing. When the war ended, Jack was in Germany. Following the war, he began farming at Manson. He is a member of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58.
