189 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SISSON, Scotty WWII Scotty was born in Wingham, Manitoba in 1921. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1939 and was called up in 1941. F/O Sisson received his wings and commission in December 1942 and was a pilot of a de Havilland Mosquito in the 409 Nighthawks Squadron flying reconnaissance missions. He was shot down over Normandy, France on June 16th, 1944 and captured as a POW the next day, then shipped to Stalag Luft III. As the war wound down, the POWs were forced to march long distances. Scotty was very weak but his comrades helped him along the way, enabling his survival. After the war Flight Lieutenant Sisson married Margaret “Peggie” Wood from Scotland and moved back to Manitoba where they had ten kids, farmed, owned an agricultural dealership, spread square-dancing throughout the province, coached hockey, and with their family started a golf course in Elm Creek. SKARDAL, Kristjan A. WWI Kristjan was born in Iceland on May 16, 1899, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Skardal. Chris enlisted at Winnipeg on July 10, 1917, receiving his training at St. Charles before going overseas to serve in France with the 16th Battalion. He participated in battle at Amiens, Arras and Cambrai. Upon returning to Canada, Chris commenced farming. In 1923, he married Una Bergson (deceased 1934). They had two sons Albert at Somerset and Norman on the home farm in Baldur. SLATER, Hubert John WWII Hubert was born in Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1916. He joined the Navy and served on the High Seas aboard HMCS Mahone, Sankaty and Halifax during World War II. When he was discharged from the Navy, he bought a farm. He sold it in 1962 and moved to Shoal Lake and went into road construction. Later, he and his son Ross moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Ross is still there. He was a member of the Yorkton Legion Branch for ten years. Hubert passed away in 1984.
