187 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SIDDALL, William “Bill” WWI Bill was born in 1894 in Curbar, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1912, settling in Port Arthur, Ontario. He served in the 96th Lake Superior Regiment then enlisted in the C.E.F., posted to The Little Black Devils. He served in England, France and Germany during World War II. Bill was at the Battle of Ypres gas attack. Despite the effects of the gas, Bill’s 8th Btn left their trenches and engaged the Germans hand to hand combat. Many were killed. Bill was injured and taken as a prisoner of war at Kriegsgefangenelager Camp from May of 1915 to December of 1918. While a prisoner of war, Bill cared for the horses. He would hide horse hair from the horses’ tails and made a necklace over the three years. There is a pattern to it with likely a meaning. Bill met Elizabeth Pinchbeck, Sheffield and married in March of 1919. He gave Elizabeth the necklace as a gift which she wore for years. Bill was a very kind, gentle man who loved gardening. He passed away in 1972 in Winnipeg. SIMMS, Arthur WWI Arthur was born in 1892 in Russell, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army and went to training in Osborne Barracks, Winnipeg. He went overseas with the 78th Battalion, arriving in Liverpool, England in May of 1916. By August, he was in Ypres, France. He served in Canada, England and France during World War I. While on night patrol, he was taken prisoner and forced to work behind enemy lines in France without any necessities of life. After a year, he was sent to Germany where Red Cross parcels and clothes awaited him. He was repatriated through Copenhagen, Denmark on December 17, 1918 while a band on the dock played “The Maple Leaf Forever”, thence to Scotland Christmas Day, finally arriving in Canada in April of 1919. Arthur married Edna Kelly of Crawford Park, MB where Arthur took up farming and their six children attended Clear Creek School. In 1947, the farm was sold and the family moved to Foxwarren, MB. Arthur died in 1982 at the age of 89 and Edna passed away in 1992. They are buried in Foxwarren Cemetery. SINCLAIR, Lloyd G. WWII Lloyd was born in Elkhorn, Manitoba and was raised on the family farm nearby. After finishing high school, he taught school. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force early in the war and trained as a pilot. Following graduation from the pilot training course, he was sent to England for further training. He served in England during World War II. He became the Captain of a Lancaster bomber taking part in the air offensive against Germany. His aircraft was shot down over Germany and the entire crew was killed. Sinclair Rapids on the Mistey River in Northern Manitoba were named in memory of Sergeant Lloyd Sinclair.
