185 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SAWYER, James WWII James was born in Foxwarren, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the forces in 1939 signing on with the PPCLI in Winnipeg. After his training, he was shipped to England where he served with the tank division of the 8th RECCE. He served in England, France and the Netherlands during World War II. He was wounded while at the Falaise Gap in 1944. He was hospitalized at Horley Canadian Military Hospital in Surrey, England. He received the following medals: (5) Gold Star – GRJ VI, 1939 – 1945 Star; Gold Star - GRJ VI, the France and Germany Star; Silver-Georgivs VI D G Briomn Rex F D IMD Imp; 1939 – 1945 Defence Medal; Canada 1939 – 1945 Voluntary Service Volontaire; Georgivs VID AG BR Omn Resetindiare IMT 1939 – 1945. His unit returned to Canada in September of 1945 where he was discharged. James was active with the 8th RECCE reunions held all over Canada until his death in 1987. He was also a member of the Pro Pats Legion Branch in Victoria for forty years. SCOTT, Charles Pringle BOER WAR, WWI & WWII Charles joined the Army and served with the Black Watch. He served in China and fought in the Boer War and in both World War I and World War II. SELLEN, Linton Andrew PEACETIME Linton joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1986. He completed Officer Leadership training, finishing first of 110 candidates, and was commissioned an officer. He trained as a pilot and was presented his Pilot Wings by his father – WWII Bomber Command Pilot Sqn #J86580 Richard Sellen – in 1987. Linton was selected by coursemates as Valedictorian at their Wings Graduation. He became a flying instructor, earning A1 instructor category, and became an instrument check pilot, finishing first on course. He served as Flight Commander at the Flight Instructor School, training other instructors. He flew operationally at 402 Sqn as Chief of Pilot Training. Linton retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force in 2000. His maternal grandfather, Robert M. McLeod #187212 3rd Battalion Light Infantry Winnipeg Rifles, WWI was in the trenches in France and at Vimy Ridge. His uncle, Roderick M. McLeod #R119623 Bomber Command 419 Sqn, served during World War II and was killed in action over France. Uncle R. Fraser McLeod # H445398 CIC England, RCOC act, served during World War II. Uncle Alick R. McLeod #800286 served in the Canadian Army in the Korean War.
