177 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca RICHARDSON, James J. “Jim” WWII James was born in Brandon, Manitoba. Jim joined the Canadian Navy in 1942. He served during World War II on the convoy escort ship St. Croix as a coder. His work was to decode secret messages that came to his ship by radio. While protecting merchant ships from German submarines, the St. Croix was torpedoed by a submarine. Jim was lost with his ship. ROBERTS, William WWI William was born on August 15, 1895 in Cornwall, England to John Roberts and Mary Julia Elland Holland. He immigrated to Canada in 1896 with his parents and two older brothers. Upon arrival, they purchased a grain and dairy farm in Dugald, Manitoba. William was a very active young man and was involved in baseball and hockey. He attended the Manitoba Agricultural College obtaining his diploma in agriculture. After college, William learned to fly and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in January of 1918. On August 29, 1918 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. However, he was declared unfit for flight duty and spent the remainder of his service in observation duties and ground detail. He returned home in April of 1919. Following his return to Canada, he spent some time in Victoria, British Columbia. He passed away on March 3, 1928 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Winnipeg, MB. ROBERTSON, George F. WWII Geordie was born in McAuley, Manitoba. He joined the Army in 1942 and after basic training in Canada, he proceeded to England where he was assigned to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry regiment. He was with his regiment in the assault on Sicily in 1943. He was wounded in the Campaign in Italy. After convalescing, he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Holland. He was discharged as a Corporal in 1945. He began farming and married Lillian Martin, they raised a family of two girls. Geordie was an active member of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58.
