171 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca POLCHNSKI, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in Mulvihill, Manitoba in 1915. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in 1942 the same year that his brother, Don, enlisted with the Navy. Once discharged, he was employed in Windsor, Ontario where his oldest brother worked and lived. Joe was married and helped to raise step children where he lived the rest of his life in Windsor. PORTERFIELD, John A. “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 22, 1920. He was a member of the Navy Cadets for many years before being called to duty in 1940. He joined the Army and served with the Prince Henry as a Gunner and Signal man and toured in England, France and Italy during World War II. After the war, he and his family moved to Portage la Prairie where he was a member of the 13th Field Battery and worked with the Army Cadets for many years. Jack was also a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 for about thirty years. He passed away on February 9, 1979. POSTON, Ralph WWII Ralph was born in the Mossgiel District west of Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in April of 1940 at the age of 22. He was a member of the ground crew initially, then remustered to aircrew and trained as a navigator. He served on a Squadron on the East Coast in anti-submarine patrol duty during World War II. He was discharged in September of 1945. After the war, Ralph attended the University of Manitoba and Colorado State attaining a Master’s degree in Agriculture. He served as Agricultural Representative in Melita, Eriksdale and Whitemouth in Manitoba. He retired in Elkhorn and became a staunch supporter of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58.
