169 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PLUMB, Stan WWII Stanley was born in 1923 in Binscarth, Manitoba and attended school in Binscarth. He was in the Army during World War II and saw service in Belgium, Italy, Holland and Germany. He served with the 2nd Field Regiment as a Gunner. On return to civilian life, he worked for the CPR, then the IHC for a while and for Esso in Foxwarren, MB until his death in 1981. Stanley was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for 35 years. POHL, Henry Henderson WWII Henry was born in 1923. He served in Canada with the Canadian Infantry Corps from November 30, 1944 to July 29, 1946. L/Cpl Pohl was posted to the Canadian Provost Corps on May 23, 1945 and was awarded, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939 – 1945 War Medal. After being discharged from the Armed Forces, he made his living in all aspects of being a self-taught carpenter. He took pride in laying and refinishing wood floors until retiring. He was divorced and re-married to Marie Lazarowich. He raised two daughters, Sheila (Larry) and Patricia (Peter) and four grand-children. His untimely death was due to a Grey Goose bus and car collision on Easter day April 19, 1992. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Gladstone Branch 110. POLCHNSKI, Dominic “Don” WWII Don was born at Mulvihill, Manitoba. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942. He served on at least twelve frigates stopping at many ports in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In May of 1944, the Matane one of the frigates that Don was on at the time was hit by a glider bomb from Luftwaffe. A large hole was blown into the engine room causing steam to escape and scald engine room personnel. Flooding of the compartment followed. Most of the wounded were injured by steam scalding. Don was injured but not scalded. He was discharged on October 18, 1945. Don married Grace McLachlan and they lived on a farm near Katrime, MB and later retired to Gladstone, MB. Don was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Gladstone Branch 110.
