15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ARMSTRONG, Donald “Don” WWII Don was born on April 20, 1924, and raised on the family farm in the Parkland district, south of Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve on May 12, 1943. He served in World War II on the High Seas on North Atlantic convoy duty until the war ended. Don was discharged on October 5, 1945. After the war, Don and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Turner Valley, Alberta where he worked for Royalite Oil Company. BAJUS, William “Will” WWI Will was born and raised on the family farm north of Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Army on March 21, 1917 and served overseas in England and in France with the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column during World War I. After the war, he became a successful farmer in partnership with his brother. He married Kathleen Bryant on January 15, 1942 and together they raised seven children. Will passed away in 1961. BAKER, William WWI William was born on January 12, 1896 in Ontario. He was a rancher at the time of his enlistment with the 137th Battalion in Calgary on February 8, 1916. His unit sailed from Halifax aboard S.S. Olympic to England where he transferred to the 31st Battalion and William was in France by the end of November 1916. In August of 1917 he received a gunshot wound to his right leg and was returned to England and treated in hospitals in Manchester and Epsom until July of 1918. While William was hospitalized he met his future wife, Lillian (Elizabeth) Drake. William returned to Canada in April of 1919 and received his official discharge due to demobilization. In September of 1920, Lillian arrived in Canada. They first lived in Ameliasburgh, ON where they farmed but soon moved to Carman, Manitoba, then to Keewatin, ON where William worked for the Lake of the Woods Milling Company and a Flour Mill for 30 years before retiring. William was a sports leader and community worker. William and Lillian had five children: Sheilah, Desmond, Ron, Doreen and Dennis. William passed away at the age of 64 on February 1, 1959.
