165 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PETERSON, Norman P. WWII Norman was born on the farm in Erickson, Manitoba in 1925. Following Grade 12, at Foxwarren Collegiate Institute, he spent a year on his father’s farm at Erickson and then joined the Army in 1944. He was a Two-Stripe Corporal in the Infantry and Service Corps, stationed at Fort Osborne, Camp Debert, Halifax, Barriefield, Dundurn, Fort Gary, Camp Borden, Chadibucto and the Rivers Joint Air-School. Following the war, he enrolled at the University of Manitoba, attaining the Science in Agriculture Degree. While there, he was a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps where he was offered a King’s Commission which he declined. He formed his own company – Peterson Manufacturing, patented several small tools, specializing in Liners for Chimney of Gas Furnaces as well as Continuous Eavestroughs. He inherited his father’s farm in 1979, rents it out and resided in Onanole, MB. He is a member of the Erickson Legion Branch 143 and has been for over 50 years. PHILLIPS, Ross M. WWII Ross was born in Roland, Manitoba on October 20, 1917 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1942 and served in World War II. In the spring of 1943, he sailed to England for more training and in July of that year went to Italy. He went right to the front lines which was called “The Hitler Line” where fighting was very fierce and conditions terrible. He was then transferred to another division called Lanark & Renfrew where he saw some really fierce fighting. It was called “The Gothic Line”. He ended up getting Jaundice and Malaria so he had to spend a month in hospital. When he came out, everyone in his platoon had been killed except four. In the spring of 1945, he left Italy and went to Germany where he spent six months in Army Occupation. He arrived home in the spring of 1946. He was a member of the Carman Legion Branch 18 for 62 years and was a Life Member. He passed away on March 3, 2008 at the age of ninety. PIZZEY, Fredrick WWI Fredrick was born in the Binscarth District in 1891. He was a trench mortar gunman in France and Germany during World War I. He was in the trenches when mustard gas was used. He was a member of the Foxwarren Rifle Club. When he returned home from the war, he started a business with his brother. From there, he went into farming and trucking. He also started a gun dealership and gunsmithing business where he repaired R.C.M.P. service revolvers. Frederick was also known to be a keen hunter and conservationist. He never married and passed away in 1962.
