163 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca OSSACHUK, George G. W. O. “Joe” WWII Joe was born in Fort Frances, Ontario in 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Bermuda with the R.C.N.V.R. during World War II. The name of the ship he was on was “Shawinigan”. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for two years. Joe passed away in 2009. PADDOCK, Cecil WWII Cecil was the manager of the Elkhorn Creamery when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained as an air gunner and went overseas on graduation. He joined the 424 Squadron, a bomber unit that saw action in the air offensive against German targets and in the campaigns in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Cecil completed a tour of operations and for his outstanding contribution was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was discharged as a Squadron Leader. After the war, Cecil resumed his civilian career as manager of the creamery in Reston, MB. His medals include the Air Gunner’s Badge, 1939 – 1945 Star, CVSM and Clasp, European Star, Italy Star and Defence Medal. PAWLUK, Daniel D. “Dan” WWII Daniel was born in Rossburn, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the Army and served with the #10 District Depot Canadian Infantry Corps (R.W.R.) in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was awarded the France and Germany Star and the Foreign Coronation Medal upon discharge in 1946. In 1986, Dan received the Diamond Jubilee Medal. He returned to Rossburn after being discharged from the Army and on July 12, 1947, married Helen Gandza of Ruthenia, MB. They purchased a farm in Foxwarren, MB in 1953. Here, they raised their four children, Ron, Brian, Randy and Michelle. Dan enjoyed the farm life, growing grain and raising livestock. He was a member of the Legion Branch 152 for 41 years in Foxwarren and enjoyed the friendship of many fellow veterans in the area. He enjoyed attending the hockey games and curling in Foxwarren. He was a lover of fishing, particularly ice fishing. In 1989, Dan and Helen retired to Russell, MB. He was a friendly, good natured man who always had a joke to tell and a smile to share with those he met. Dan passed away on December 30, 2000 at the age of eighty. He rests eternally at the Russell Cemetery in Russell, Manitoba.
