161 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca O’NEILL, Dori J. WWII Dori was born in St. Peters (East Selkirk), Manitoba on December 7, 1919. He was the son of Patrick and Christine O’Neill. He enlisted on September 26, 1939 in Winnipeg at the age of 19 and served during World War II. He was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers, RCIC and serviced in Bermuda, Jamaica and Hong Kong (“C” Force). Dori was killed in action on December 19, 1941 in Hong Kong and is buried in the Hong Kong Memorial. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939 – 1945 Star and the Pacific Medal. ORCHARD, Clarence N. WWII Clarence was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1924. He joined the 25th Field Regiment RCA in 1943. He took his army training at A4 Barracks in Brandon, at Shilo, Manitoba and at the West Coast. After a year, he transferred to the Canadian Navy in the then volunteer reserve, RCNVR. Completing advanced naval training at HMCS Cornwallis Base at Deep Brook, Nova Scotia he served on HMCS Hapstick, a British vessel, and then HMCS The Pas in patrolling and protecting Canadian waters. A well, The Pas, a Corvette often joined other escorts on the Triangle Run guarding loaded ships from New York and Boston convoy. They arrived in Halifax’s Bedford Basin and along with many other ships were formed into larger convoys and escorted by the same protectors met and handed over their charges to the Atlantic escort groups out of St. John’s, Newfoundland which took them to England, Ireland and Europe. ORR, James H. “Jim” WWII Jim was born at Beulah, Manitoba in 1912. He enlisted on September 13, 1939, joining the 12th Field Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers and later transferring to the Canadian Armoured Corps when he received his commission. Jim saw active duty in Canada, Britain and northwest Europe, receiving the following medals: France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939 – 1945. He was honourably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant in September of 1945. Jim married Doris Alexander of Bookham, Surrey, England and she followed him to Canada as a war bride in March of 1946. Together they raised seven children on a farm near Binscarth, Manitoba. Jim was a member of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for 45 years until his death in 1990.
